Securing Botman has been top of the agenda for Newcastle’s new sporting director, Ross Wilson, since he arrived from Nottingham Forest.

Wilson reportedly started talks in summer 2025 and has been pushing to wrap them up quickly, keen to avoid a repeat of the Alexander Isak situation, where delayed negotiations saw the striker leave the club in a high-profile exit.

Botman, 25, is now considered a key part of Eddie Howe’s long-term defensive plans, forming a strong partnership with summer signing Malick Thiaw.

After two seasons disrupted by injuries, including a serious ACL setback in 2024, Botman has bounced back this season, though he was still sidelined for Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea and Newcastle United’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester United.

When fit, his performances have been consistent, quieting doubts over his durability, and naturally have attracted interest from some of Europe’s top clubs, including PSG, Inter Milan, Bayer Leverkusen, Chelsea, and Manchester City.

But Newcastle have resisted all approaches so far, showing just how important he is to their plans. Botman’s original five-year deal, signed from Lille in June 2022, had 18 months remaining. Extension talks started in late 2025, with reports suggesting a three-year add-on to take him to 2030.

Talks have sped up, and the deal is officially complete. This move is part of Newcastle’s wider plan to secure the squad’s core and add long-term stability for the seasons ahead.
