South Korea’s 4-0 defeat to Ivory Coast has triggered a wave of angry, sarcastic and frustrated reactions from fans after the result was posted on the national team’s X handle. What was meant to be another international test quickly turned into a painful night for the Taegeuk Warriors, as Ivory Coast dominated key moments and punished them with clinical finishing.

On the pitch, Softfootball reported that South Korea were not completely without chances. They did show flashes going forward and even hit the woodwork three times, which gave some supporters reason to believe the scoreline could have looked different.

But while they lacked end product, Ivory Coast were sharp, direct and ruthless in front of goal. The Elephants looked physically stronger, more organised and far more dangerous every time they broke forward. It was another reminder of the attacking quality within the Ivorian side, especially after Ivory Coast eased past Burkina Faso 3-0 as their AFCON title defence gathered pace, while elsewhere Mohamed Salah inspired Egypt into the AFCON semi-final after a win over Ivory Coast in another major continental showdown.

The fans, however, were focused less on excuses and more on blame.

John Kim reacted with heavy sarcasm, saying,

“What do you mean disappointing??? Saying the big spatula is disappointing?? Get your head straight, livestock coop…”

tsk said

“ Against the powerhouse Côte d’Ivoire, we were superior in terms of play. As expected of coach Hong Myung-bo. The South Korean national team looked like it was already in the final polishing stage. He’s truly Asia’s greatest coach.”

Bill Lee added,

“Kyoto Sangga’s Yoon Sung-jun kept yelling why they’re not recruiting Rick, but I was the one being unreasonable lol. Asking them to run under the coach of such a trash team is way too much of a nuisance.”

Adolf blamed officiating, writing,

“Decisions were very lenient, and three handballs went unpunished. Otherwise, this tragedy would have been unimaginable…”

Dee tried to stay balanced, saying,

“You lot hit the post 3 times, it could have been a different game if one went in. Great set of fans still chanting at 3 nil down well done. Unlucky result…”

i9bh6 wrote,

“It’s a shame, but the way it implies everything feels insanely impressive.”

John Lee kept it blunt, saying,

“Hong Myung Bo should retire! Good players can’t overcome bad coaching…”

Saax fumed,

“Is this even soccer? Damn, Hong Myung-bo, Chung Mong-gyu, just get the hell out. Seriously stressing me out. You guys are the ones ruining everything.”

Rebranding warned,

“If they’re serious and don’t want to be embarrassed in the WC, they need to fire Hong Myungbo now…”

Gomen offered a strange bit of hope, saying,

“Poor thing, to put it bluntly, this result is terrible. But even if you get a bad result in the qualifiers, it turns out to be a good result in the World Cup…”

And Nolao questioned the team’s recent direction, saying,

“Hasn’t Korea been acting weird lately? There’s no way they should be this weak. I feel like they’ve been in a bad streak ever since the coach changed…”

For South Korea, this was more than just a bad result. For many fans, it felt like a warning sign.
