Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham has urged Ruben Amorim to make an ambitious move for Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice in January, describing it as the kind of statement signing that could define his early tenure at Old Trafford.

United will have the opportunity to strengthen their squad from January 1 through to the deadline on February 3, marking Amorim’s first transfer window in charge of the club.

Softfootball understands Sheringham shared his bold suggestion while speaking to Genting Casino. Explaining why Rice would be an ideal signing, Sheringham said:

I said a couple of years ago, Manchester United should have got Declan Rice. If they went out and bought Declan Rice off of Arsenal, that’d make me laugh, because that’d obviously make Arsenal weaker and make United even stronger.

The former England striker also praised Rice’s leadership qualities, adding:

He’s a proper player that leads by example. When you’re making a statement about a new manager coming in and buying new players, that is the type of player you buy. Declan Rice all day.

While a move for Rice would be extremely difficult given his importance to Arsenal, Sheringham believes players of his calibre are exactly what United need if Amorim is to rebuild the squad and restore the club’s status as genuine title contenders.
