Softfootball understands that Benjamin Šeško is set to make a major decision about his future, the striker is expected to choose between Newcastle United and Manchester United in what’s been a tightly contested transfer race.
The 21-year-old RB Leipzig striker has been in high demand this summer, with both Premier League giants actively chasing his signature. But according to reports in Slovenia, the Slovenian international has now opted to join the Magpies after weeks of speculation and negotiations.

Despite the reports giving Newcastle the edge. Transfer expert and sports journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed via his official X handle that a final decision has not been made yet.
He tweeted via X:
“Benjamin Šeško will make his final decision soon.
“Newcastle informed Leipzig last week: they’re set to match their request, same for player terms.
“Man United still there, in contact with Leipzig as well, set to bid if Šeško chooses them.”
Newcastle are moving swiftly, informing Leipzig last week they were willing to match any offer for Šeško, including personal terms. And they have now moved a step closer, as German sports journalist Florian Plettenberg reported that Newcastle have reportedly tabled an offer that could reach €80 million if add-ons are included.
Plettenberg posted via his official X account:
“Newcastle have submitted an official offer of €75m plus €5m in bonus payments for Benjamin #Sesko, but Manchester United have made it clear to RB Leipzig that they are still in the race and ready to make their move. #MUFC The race remains open between Newcastle and Manchester United.”
Despite Manchester United’s strong interest especially from director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, who previously worked with Šeško at Red Bull Salzburg it seems the striker might be swayed by Newcastle’s project and clearer path to first-team football, but the prestige and history of Manchester United cannot be ignored easily, and Šeško might be tempted by the chance to lead Manchester United’s revolution.

Arsenal were previously in the mix but turned their attention to Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres earlier this summer.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe had reportedly made Šeško a priority signing, especially with ongoing uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak’s future. The Swedish forward is believed to be pushing for a move amid interest from Liverpool, who recently had a £110 million bid rejected.
With Isak sidelined and potentially on the way out, Newcastle’s need for a top-class forward grew urgent. Šeško, who only joined Leipzig from Salzburg in 2023, now looks set to lead the line at St James’ Park. We earlier reported that the striker was omitted from the squad to face Atalanta due to transfer speculations, and in the coming days we will know the final destination of the front man.
