Sadiq Umar has had enough of watching teammates get torn apart on social media every time results go against Nigeria.
The Real Sociedad striker addressed the issue following the Super Eagles’ 2-1 loss to Rwanda, arguing that fan criticism has crossed a line that could push players away from the national team altogether.
Softfootball learnt that Sadiq spoke candidly in an interview about the emotional toll, saying:
If things continue like this, there are lots of players that will not like to play for the Super Eagles. W
hen we come to play here, it’s not about the money, it’s for the love. Where you feel is your home, they tell you it’s not.
There are some of my teammates that are down after every game we play because the fans are killing them on social media.
He added that football today demands mental toughness more than ever, warning that without it, players simply can’t survive the pressure that comes with wearing the national colors.
