Ruben Amorim explains Kobbie Mainoo’s lack of playing time at Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has revealed the reasons why England midfielder, Kobbie Mainoo hasn’t featured for the Red Devils this season.

Softfootball understands that Kobbie is behind the pecking order for Amorim as he considers club captain Bruno Fernandez ahead of him.

Interestingly, the academy product featured heavily in pre-season alongside Manuel Ugarte in midfield. The Uruguayan has so far made two substitute appearances for the Mancunians while Mainoo awaits his chance to impress the manager.

During an interview with Manchester United’s official club media, Amorim highlighted the reasons Mainoo has not featured so far this season.

Amorim revealed:

“No, he is fighting for the position now with Bruno (Fernandes). And I changed two midfielders.

“I like Mason Mount there because we want to score a goal. And then when I change it, I felt that the team needed to return to one holding midfielder.

“So he just needs to fight for the position with Bruno in training. Like it should be at Manchester United.”

Kobbie Mainoo was on the bench for the opening game of the Premier League against Arsenal. The team lost 1-0 at home and the academy graduate did not get any minutes. He was also overlooked for the Fulham match at Craven Cottage where the Red Devils drew 1-1 and Fernandez missed a penalty.

Mainoo is one of the highly rated youngsters in English football since breaking through the ranks. Despite being just 19-year-old, he has played in the UEFA Europa League final for Manchester United and Euro Championship final for England.

Mainoo is expected to start the Carabao Cup on Wednesday against English League One side Grimsby and would hope his performance is good enough to hand him a place in the starting XI for the Premier League match-day 3 fixture against Burnley at Old Trafford.
