Liam Rosenior has confirmed Enzo Fernandez will retain his vice-captaincy at Chelsea F.C. despite recent controversy surrounding his public comments, Softfootball reports. This was revealed by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano via his official X account.

The midfielder was dropped for two matches, including the FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale F.C. and a Premier League clash with Manchester City, after Rosenior stated that “a line was crossed” in relation to club culture and ongoing speculation about his future.

However, the Chelsea manager has made it clear that the disciplinary action will not extend to stripping Fernández of his leadership role. Rosenior emphasized that the Argentine “doesn’t deserve” to lose his vice-captaincy, highlighting the club’s intention to separate internal discipline from long-term leadership structure.

Romano revealed:

Liam Rosenior says Enzo will not be stripped of vice captaincy: Enzo is still part of the leadership group. We’ll see after Man City game. For me, I won’t be stripping him of anything because he doesn’t deserve that.

In other reports by Romano, Rosenoir also confirmed that Fernández will also continue training and remain fully integrated within the squad during his suspension.

Liam Rosenior: Enzo will still be here during the two-game ban; he’ll still train, he’s still part of the group.

The situation reflects a careful balance at Chelsea, enforcing standards while maintaining squad unity. Rosenior has stressed that the issue is centered on public communication rather than a breakdown in relationships within the dressing room.

Beyond the Fernández situation, Rosenior has defended his early tenure at the club, noting that Chelsea have been among the top-performing teams in the league since his appointment in January 2026. Despite external criticism and talk of instability, he insists the team is progressing in the right direction.

Rosenior: My record in the Premier League since I joined the club, we are fourth in the league. There is a noise around the football club that we are in a crisis, that I am out of my depth, that I talk nonsense, I know all of the noise.

He also addressed Chelsea’s youth-driven approach, stating that while processes may need refinement, the club remains focused on delivering immediate results while building toward sustained success.

Liam Rosenior when asked if Chelsea change youth led strategy: When you have a process, you have to adjust your process to get to where you want to be. You’ll see. You’ll see in the actions we take rather than the words I speak.

Liam Rosenior: We want to win NOW. There is not a change, but a progress in our thinking about what’s needed so we can really, really challenge for titles next year, which is what this club deserves.

According to Rosenior, the ambition is clear Chelsea want to “win now” while laying the foundation to compete consistently for major titles in the near future.
