Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Barcelona at Stamford Bridge on November 25 drew plenty of attention on its own, but it was Robert Sánchez who lit the biggest fire afterwards. Speaking after the match, which SoftFootball reported, the goalkeeper did not hesitate when asked about the level of opposition.

Sánchez said, in a post shared by Fabrizio Romano on his official X account, that everyone looks really good until they come to the Premier League and added that this is the stage where football becomes serious. His comments quickly spread on social media and arrived at a moment where English clubs are consistently winning European matchups.

The remark did not come out of nowhere. Much of the conversation centred on Lamine Yamal, who arrived at Stamford Bridge with plenty of hype but left with one of his quieter nights. Sánchez did not shy away from praising Marc Cucurella, saying his teammate had him in his pocket.
It was a simple line, but it summed up how one-sided that duel felt. Cucurella pressed him, stepped into tackles early and rarely let Barcelona settle on that side.

Sánchez went even further when asked about expectations for the rest of the Champions League season. Instead of hinting at caution, he called Chelsea the favourites and dismissed the idea that Barcelona should be viewed that way. He explained that the team has trained well under Enzo Maresca and said the group walked into the match confident they could control it from the start.
His broader point about the Premier League versus La Liga has been echoed elsewhere this season. English sides have won most of the meetings between both leagues, and Spanish teams have stretched long spells without scoring in several of those matches except for Barcelona’s tight win at Newcastle that SoftFootball covered recently.

Sánchez, who has grown into a leadership role since arriving from Brighton, framed it as the reality of the moment rather than a dig. Chelsea now turn their focus back to domestic action, while Barcelona return home needing a response. Whether Sánchez’s comments age well will depend on what both clubs do next.
