Manchester United would reportedly have to pay Ruben Amorim a whooping £12million if they sack the Portuguese coach within the first year of his contract at Old Trafford.

Softfootball reported that Man United appointed Amorim on November 1, 2024 on a two-and-a-half-year deal worth £6.5m a season with the option of a 12-month extension, after agreeing to pay Sporting Lisbon £9.2m to buy him out of his contract in Portugal..

Athe moment, Amorim’s position as Manchester United boss is again under scrutiny after his side suffered yet another Premier League defeat, a third one this season and casting further doubt over his future at Old Trafford. The Red Devils were outplayed in a 3-1 loss to Brentford, with Amorim’s men looking second best throughout the match.

Softfootball understood that questions about the Portuguese coach’s tenure surfaced following the derby loss to Manchester City, and it was revealed that United would have to shell out a hefty compensation package if they decided to sack Amorim.

According to Fabrizio Romano via his Facebook page quoting the Daily Mail, Manchester United would need to pay £12million compensation to Amorim if he gets sacked . The Portuguese gaffer took over on November 1 last year, signing a two-and-a-half-year deal with an option for a further 12 months.

United shelled out approximately £9.2m to buy him out of his contract from Sporting Lisbon in November 2024, and should they choose to part ways with Amorim within the first year of his contract, they will face a significant compensation bill. It’s also understood that Amorim’s backroom team would likewise be entitled to payouts should they choose to leave.

Whether United’s position on the Portuguese boss has shifted remains unclear, though they were previously thought to be backing the 40-year-old firmly, and United can rarely afford to pay off their sixth manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, with the club’s ongoing financial difficulties set to be revealed when their annual accounts are published at noon on Wednesday.

United hope that another change of manager won’t be needed, and believe the stats show an improvement this season despite having just one win in four Premier League games and a Carabao Cup exit to League Two Grimsby Town.

Among the early favourites to replace Amorim at Old Trafford if he goes are his Portuguese compatriot Marco Silva of Fulham, Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, Aston Villa’s Unai Emery and Andoni Iraola of Bournemouth.
