Real Madrid suffered a shocking 2–1 defeat to Mallorca, raising serious questions about their title charge. Losing to a relegation-threatened side at this stage of the season has dealt a major blow to their chances of competing for LaLiga.

With Barcelona securing a 2–1 win over Atletico Madrid, the gap has now widened to seven points between Barcelona and Real Madrid, with just eight matches left to play. This result could prove decisive in the title race.

There was clearly no balance in the Madrid team, especially in midfield, which looked poor throughout the game. Defensive lapses also played a part, particularly in the build-up to Mallorca’s second goal, where poor marking and lack of awareness cost them.

Trent Alexander-Arnold showed little awareness defensively, finding himself out of position, almost like a winger rather than maintaining his defensive duties.

Kylian Mbappé, who performed well for France during the international break, was unable to replicate that form in this match. Softfootball is also surprised that Mbappé was benched, especially in such a crucial game.

At this stage, LaLiga is beginning to look out of reach for Real Madrid unless there is a dramatic turnaround in the remaining fixtures.
