PSG Stun Spurs in Dramatic Super Cup Comeback, Win 4-3 on Penalties

Paris Saint-Germain pulled off a stunning late rally to beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties and lift the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, adding a fifth trophy to their 2025 haul.

The French champions looked dead and buried when Spurs led 2-0 early in the second half, but substitutes Lee Kang-in and Gonçalo Ramos struck in the dying minutes to force a shootout. Lee fired home from the edge of the box in the 85th minute, and Ramos powered in a stoppage-time header from Ousmane Dembélé’s cross to level the match at 2-2.

In the shootout, PSG recovered from Vitinha’s early miss by scoring their next four spot kicks, with Nuno Mendes calmly converting the decisive penalty. Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven and Mathys Tel both failed to score, sealing the victory for Luis Enrique’s side.

Softfootball understands that this will be PSG’s second European Cup since winning the now-defunct UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1992; a celebratory PSG posted on its official X handle a video to celebrate the new achievement.

They also posted another video pointing to the fact that the recent achievement was historical, as it is the first time the Club has won the UEFA Super Cup.

The match contested between the previous season’s Champions League winners (PSG) and Europa League champions (Tottenham) started brightly for Spurs. Van de Ven pounced on a rebound in the 39th minute after new PSG keeper Lucas Chevalier tipped João Palhinha’s shot onto the crossbar.

Cristian Romero, recently named Tottenham captain, doubled the lead in the 48th minute with a header Chevalier will want back.

Tottenham, further along in preseason preparations after PSG’s extended Club World Cup run in July, looked sharper for much of the game. It was also the first competitive match for new Spurs boss Thomas Frank, who replaced Ange Postecoglou over the summer.

But PSG’s late surge swung the momentum. Having already claimed the Champions League, Ligue 1, Coupe de France, and Trophee des Champions this year, the Parisians showed once again they know how to win big matches even when things look bleak.

Last season’s treble winners now add the Super Cup to their collection, their only blemish in 2025 so far being a Club World Cup final loss to Chelsea
