Torsten Spittler walked away from Uyo with mixed emotions after masterminding one of the biggest shocks of the AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign — a 2-1 win over Nigeria that ultimately meant nothing for his own team’s tournament hopes.
Softfootball understands Spittler had promised “victory or nothing” ahead of the dead-rubber fixture, and his side delivered exactly that against a Super Eagles squad ranked over 130 places above them.
Reflecting on the result afterward, he said:
I’m happy because we came, we saw, we conquered. Check the FIFA rankings! The Super Eagles are ranked around 30th, while we are somewhere in the 160s. Yet we stood our ground and achieved this feat.
That pride was tempered by heartbreak, though a goalless draw between Libya and Benin Republic elsewhere in the group confirmed Rwanda’s elimination regardless of their win.
Spittler pointed to an earlier home defeat to Libya as the real turning point in their campaign, adding:
We could have won at home against Libya, and we could just as easily have lost here in Nigeria. Perhaps fate shaped things this way.
Nigeria and Benin Republic both advance to Morocco, leaving Rwanda to reflect on a qualifying run defined by one stunning night that came too late to matter.
