Portugal secured top spot in Group D with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Norway despite being reduced to 10 men in the closing stages of an eventful encounter.

The match came amid the ongoing drama surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s sudden departure from the Portugal national team camp, but the Selecao put the off-field distractions aside to produce another important result.

Portugal entered the game looking to maintain their perfect run after winning their previous four matches, while Norway arrived determined to cause an upset against a side dealing with considerable uncertainty. The two teams traded attacks during an entertaining first half, with neither side initially able to establish complete control.

Norway struck first through Kristoffer Ajer after Martin Odegaard delivered a dangerous free-kick into the Portugal penalty area. Ajer controlled the ball despite pressure from Bruno Fernandes before producing an excellent in-step strike from the edge of the box.

The effort flew beyond the reach of Diogo Costa and gave Norway a 1-0 lead. Portugal’s response, however, was almost immediate.

Just two minutes after falling behind, Portugal found an equaliser through Joao Cancelo. Nuno Mendes launched a long throw into the attacking area, with the ball eventually falling to the Barcelona full-back.

Cancelo made no mistake with his finish, striking the ball with considerable power and beating Egil Selvik at his near post to make it 1-1. The goal restored Portugal’s confidence and ensured the sides went into the remainder of the contest on level terms.

Portugal completed their comeback through Goncalo Ramos, who once again proved to be the difference-maker for the national team. Vitinha delivered a clever ball into the box towards Joao Felix, who did well to bring the ball under control before laying it across to Ramos.

The forward finished from close range to put Portugal 2-1 ahead. Although the finish was far from spectacular, it was ultimately enough to give Portugal the advantage they needed.

Norway continued to push for an equaliser, with Martin Odegaard attempting to influence the game from midfield and Erling Haaland looking for opportunities in the final third.

The closing stages became increasingly tense when Francisco Conceicao was shown a red card. The Portugal winger had already received a yellow card after complaining about a foul involving Leo Ostigard inside the penalty area.

He was subsequently sent off after appearing to sarcastically give the referee a thumbs-up gesture, leaving Portugal with only 10 players. The dismissal gave Norway renewed hope of finding a late equaliser, but Portugal defended their narrow advantage effectively.

Despite playing a man down, the Selecao managed to see out the remaining minutes and secure another crucial victory. The victory allows Portugal to finish the international break at the top of Group D and strengthens their position heading into the next round of fixtures.

Despite the turbulence surrounding Ronaldo’s departure and the late red card, Portugal once again demonstrated their ability to grind out results when required.
