Raheem Shaquille Sterling was born on 8 December 1994 in Kingston, Jamaica. His mother, Nadine Clarke, was a former Jamaican national athlete, influencing his distinctive running style. His father was tragically murdered when he was just two years old.

At age five, Sterling moved to Neasden, London, with his mother. He attended Copland School in Wembley but struggled with behavioral issues, leading to three years at Vernon House, a specialist school.

Club Career

Early Career & Move to Liverpool

Sterling began playing football with Alpha & Omega, a local youth club, before joining Queens Park Rangers (QPR) at age 10. His talent drew interest from Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham, Liverpool, and Manchester City. Following his mother’s advice to avoid London’s gang culture, he chose to sign with Liverpool in 2010.

Liverpool (2010–2015)

Sterling quickly rose through Liverpool’s ranks, making his senior debut in 2012 at just 17 years old. His performances earned him the Golden Boy award in 2014, recognizing him as Europe’s best young talent.

However, contract disputes led to a high-profile transfer to Manchester City in July 2015, for £49 million, a record fee for an English player at the time.

Manchester City (2015–2022)

Sterling flourished under Pep Guardiola, winning:

  • 4 Premier League titles (2017–18, 2018–19, 2020–21, 2021–22)
  • 1 FA Cup
  • 5 EFL Cups

His 2018–19 season was particularly exceptional, earning him:

  • PFA Young Player of the Year
  • FWA Footballer of the Year
  • A place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year

After seven successful seasons, he moved to Chelsea in July 2022.

Chelsea (2022–Present) & Loan to Arsenal

Sterling joined Chelsea for an undisclosed fee, becoming a key player despite the club’s inconsistent performances.

In January 2025, he moved to Arsenal on loan, adding experience and attacking firepower to Mikel Arteta’s squad.

International Career

Sterling debuted for England’s senior team in 2012 after representing the country at multiple youth levels.

He has played in:

  • 3 FIFA World Cups (2014, 2018, 2022)
  • 2 UEFA European Championships (2016, 2020)

At Euro 2020, he was England’s standout performer, scoring three crucial goals as they reached the final.
