Piero Hincapié’s international break has been cut short, with the Arsenal defender leaving Ecuador’s camp and heading back to London after picking up a muscle issue in the 1-1 draw against Morocco as reported by fabrizio romano via their x handle.

Romano reported;

Following medical tests, Piero Hincapié leaves Ecuador camp and returns to London with immediate effect. Arsenal defender will be assessed by #AFC staff this upcoming week.

The problem is understood to be a muscle contracture rather than anything serious, but Ecuador have decided not to take chances with a player who still has a heavy club schedule ahead.

He is now expected to be assessed by Arsenal’s medical staff at London Colney this week as the club keeps a close eye on his condition ahead of the run-in. Morocco’s draw with Ecuador was confirmed by Reuters, with the game ending level after a late equaliser.

For Arsenal, softfootball reported that it is another case of fitness management during a demanding period. Hincapié is not the only one returning early, with several Arsenal players also heading back from international duty sooner than expected. That will naturally raise concern among supporters, but the early signs suggest this is more precaution than panic.

The timing matters too, because Hincapié has quietly become a very important figure in Mikel Arteta’s setup this season. His calmness on the ball, positional flexibility, and defensive aggression have made him one of the more reliable options in Arsenal’s back line.

There is also growing clarity around his long-term future at the club. Reports previously confirmed that Arsenal’s deal for Hincapié was always designed to become permanent, even though it was initially structured as a loan.

Fabrizio Romano reported earlier this month that the Gunners are set to trigger the €52 million clause in June, with Bayer Leverkusen also retaining a 10 percent sell-on clause. Once completed, the Ecuadorian defender is expected to sign a five-year deal that will keep him at the club until 2030.

That arrangement now looks like very smart business from Arsenal. Hincapié has not only settled quickly in England, he has also shown why the club were willing to invest so heavily in him.

His numbers this season back that up too, with strong appearances across the Premier League, Champions League, and domestic cup competitions. It also adds more weight to his own words about how the move happened, with the defender previously revealing that it only took one conversation for him to feel convinced Arsenal was the right step for his career.

That speaks volumes about the trust already built between player and club. So while this latest injury update will make fans nervous, the bigger picture remains positive. Arsenal are not just monitoring one of their defenders, they are protecting a player who already looks like a key part of their future.
