Not Satisfied at All, Wirtz Voices Frustration After Late Fulham Draw

4 Min Read

Florian Wirtz admitted his disappointment after Liverpool were forced to settle for a 2-2 Premier League draw away at Fulham, despite the German playmaker finding the net for just the second time since joining the club. The post-match reaction was shared via Liverpool’s official X handle, with Wirtz making it clear that a single point was not the outcome the Reds were aiming for.

Liverpool looked set to snatch all three points when Cody Gakpo fired Arne Slot’s side into a 2-1 lead deep into stoppage time, only for Harrison Reed’s long-range strike in the final seconds to deny them victory. While the result extended Liverpool’s unbeaten run to nine matches in all competitions, it did little to ease the frustration within the camp.

Reflecting on the game after full-time, Wirtz did not hide his feelings about the missed opportunity. He said:

Not satisfied at all. I think we need points, we wanted three points. We know there’s no easy game in this league. Especially how we came back, three points would have been [a] must-have.

The midfielder also pointed to a worrying pattern in recent results, stressing that draws are not enough for a team with Liverpool’s ambitions. Wirtz added:

I think again we are in a bit of a difficult situation now because we drew two times – first at home and now today. That’s not what we want – we want more. We have to get better but it’s still a process and hopefully [in the] next game we are there again.

Wirtz’s goal itself came with a moment of uncertainty, as VAR was required to overturn an initial offside call before the strike was confirmed. The former Leverkusen man revealed he was already convinced the goal would be ruled out. he admitted:

I was sure it was offside, so I didn’t even celebrate,”“I’m happy that I scored but I would rather take the three points.

Assessing the overall performance, Wirtz highlighted a clear improvement after the break, while acknowledging Liverpool’s struggles in the opening 45 minutes. he explained.

I think the intensity we brought on the pitch in the second half was much better, In the first half, we didn’t press them well, we didn’t find solutions to play. The second half was much better and we scored also two goals.

Softfootball understands that Wirtz had earlier stated his belief that Liverpool will build momentum sooner rather than later, a view that remains intact despite the late setback at Craven Cottage.

For Liverpool, the draw will feel like two points dropped rather than one gained, but Wirtz’s growing influence and honesty shows a squad still confident that consistency and victories are just around the corner.
