The Nigerian government has denied reports alleging that its citizens are being harassed in Libya following the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ruling on the botched 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture between the Super Eagles and the Mediterranean Knights.
Softfootball understands that the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued the clarification after concerns emerged over reports in sections of the Libyan media calling for punitive measures against Nigerian workers in the country in the wake of CAF’s verdict.
It would be recalled that CAF awarded three points and three goals to the Super Eagles after ruling against the Libyan Football Association over the poor treatment of the Nigerian team and officials at Al Abaq Airport before the scheduled qualifier last month.
According to the ministry, Nigerians residing in Libya have continued their daily activities without any form of harassment by the Libyan authorities.
“The well-being of Nigerian citizens anywhere in the world is a top priority of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and we will continue to strive to safeguard it at all times,”
the ministry stated.
The government also reassured Nigerians that it remains committed to protecting the interests and safety of its citizens abroad while closely monitoring developments in Libya.
