Newcastle United moved a step closer to the Carabao Cup final after defeating Arsenal 2-0 in the first leg of their semi-final at the Emirates Stadium.

Softfootball gathered that goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon secured a deserved victory for Eddie Howe’s side, who have now beaten Arsenal twice this season.

The Gunners created early opportunities through William Saliba, Jurrien Timber and Gabriel Martinelli, but Newcastle remained disciplined before Isak opened the scoring in the 38th minute.

Anthony Gordon doubled the visitors’ advantage shortly after the restart, reacting quickest after David Raya parried Isak’s initial effort.

Arsenal pushed for a way back into the contest, with Kai Havertz missing a golden chance, but Newcastle defended resolutely to preserve their two-goal cushion ahead of the return leg at St James’ Park.

The Magpies will now travel home with a significant advantage as they chase a place in the Carabao Cup final.
