There is something Softfootball analysts have observed in Manchester United’s 2–2 draw with AFC Bournemouth, raising questions as to whether supporters have fully taken note.

Going forward, Kobbie Mainoo has been viewed by some as not yet a complete attacking midfielder option for a consistent first-team role. In the Bournemouth game, it was noted that once Casemiro was beaten in midfield, there was often little visible cover.

Mainoo, who frequently partners Casemiro, has been criticised in this context for not consistently tracking back, making tackles, or chasing down opponents, with players often appearing to outpace him. Observations suggest that Mainoo tends to perform best when Casemiro is dominant, Bruno Fernandes is influential, and the defensive line is stable.

At the same time, Mainoo remains a very young player, and comparisons have been made with Roméo Lavia. When fit, Lavia is regarded as one of the stronger ball carriers in the Premier League, though injuries have limited his impact.

Looking ahead, if Manchester United return to the UEFA Champions League, there are suggestions the club should recruit two established midfielders. Names such as Bruno Guimarães have been mentioned, although concerns remain about recovery pace compared to more energetic players like Elliot Anderson.

There is also concern about how the current midfield would cope against elite opposition. For example, a high pressing side like Paris Saint-Germain who defeated Chelsea 3–0 in the second leg of a 2025/26 UEFA Champions League round could expose such weaknesses, with players like Mainoo potentially struggling under sustained pressure.

Attention may now turn to how Michael Carrick and the wider coaching setup address these concerns in the coming fixtures.
