Michael Carrick Emerges as Favourite for Manchester United Interim Job

3 Min Read

Michael Carrick has moved into clear pole position to become Manchester United’s interim head coach, with talks now edging toward a conclusion. Discussions between the club and Carrick have progressed quickly over the past few days, following positive face-to-face meetings held today, Softfootball reports.

According to sport expert Fabrizio Romano via his official X account, Carrick is now the preferred option ahead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who had also been considered seriously.

He said:

Positive talks took place today between Manchester United and Michael Carrick. He’s the leading candidate to become new interim manager until June, deal now at final stages. Talks over staff ongoing.

United’s hierarchy see Carrick as the steadier choice at this stage, especially given his recent managerial experience and calm approach under pressure, something the squad badly needs right now.

Talks are not only focused on Carrick himself but also on the shape of his backroom staff. His brother, Graeme Carrick, is expected to be part of the coaching setup if the appointment is confirmed. The pair previously worked together at Middlesbrough and within the English FA, and that familiarity is viewed as a plus rather than a risk.

The process is being led by chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, with final approval still required from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family. Ineos, United’s strategic partner, are believed to favour Carrick’s tactical clarity and modern coaching ideas, even if the emotional pull of Solskjaer remains strong among sections of the fanbase.

If Carrick does take charge, he won’t get any breathing space. A Manchester derby against City at Old Trafford on January 17 is expected to be his first game, followed by a tough trip to league leaders Arsenal on January 25. United currently sit seventh and are already out of domestic cup competitions after a 2-1 FA Cup loss to Brighton.

Caretaker boss Darren Fletcher oversaw a Manchester United 2-2 draw against Burnley, and that Brighton defeat came after Ruben Amorim’s sacking earlier in January, with Fletcher’s short spell as caretaker widely expected to conclude soon. He is set to return to Carrington in a supporting role if Carrick is appointed.
