Softfootball earlier reported that Real Madrid CF will be without Mbappé for their crucial UEFA Champions League playoff second leg against SL Benfica after knee pain flared up during training.

The club has opted for caution, particularly as the 27-year-old has been managing discomfort in his left knee since December.

Despite the ongoing issue, Mbappé has been Madrid’s standout performer during a challenging campaign, registering an extraordinary 39 goals in all competitions.

He has often played through pain in recent months, but the medical team has now decided that further rest is necessary to prevent aggravating the injury.

Mbappé has already missed several matches this season due to the same problem, including the recent 4–1 La Liga victory over Real Sociedad. With the title race and European ambitions still alive, Madrid are determined not to risk their talisman prematurely.

Current projections suggest Mbappé could return for the league fixture against RC Celta de Vigo on March 7. A timely comeback would potentially see him available for the Champions League round of 16 first leg should Madrid progress past the playoffs where they could face either Manchester City F.C. or Sporting CP.

In a separate development, FC Barcelona are reportedly in advanced negotiations to secure the permanent signing of Marcus Rashford for €30 million following his impressive 2025/26 loan spell from Manchester United F.C.. Sporting director Deco has previously hinted that the Catalan club could formalise the move after the forward’s successful stint.

In other news, Arsenal F.C. forward Viktor Gyökeres has been named Player of the Matchweek for Matchweek 27 following his decisive performance in the north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur F.C.
