Lautaro Martinez rescued Inter Milan from defeat as the Italian giants began their FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Monterrey.
Softfootball reports that Inter had to come from behind after the Mexican side took the lead, with Martinez providing the equaliser to earn a point for Cristian Chivu’s team. The result leaves Inter with work to do in their remaining group matches.
The draw was not the opening result Inter would have wanted, particularly given the club’s status as one of Europe’s leading teams. Monterrey showed that the expanded competition can provide difficult challenges for established sides.
Martinez’s goal once again highlighted his importance to the Nerazzurri. The Argentina international remains one of Inter’s most reliable attacking players and was able to deliver when his team needed a response.
Inter will now have to improve their performance in the next group fixture if they are to build a strong position for the knockout stage. The new format places greater importance on consistency, with every point potentially proving valuable.
