Cody Gakpo has officially withdrawn from the Netherlands squad after picking up an injury, with the Liverpool forward set to miss the upcoming international fixtures.
The Netherlands confirmed Gakpo’s withdrawal after the 27-year-old reported the injury following his latest club commitments. His absence is a setback for the Dutch side, particularly given his importance in the attacking department.
Gakpo was also on target during the Netherlands’ recent Nations League meeting with Germany, rescuing a point for the Dutch side with a late equaliser in Jürgen Klopp’s first game in charge of Germany.
Germany appeared on course to begin Klopp’s tenure with a victory after Felix Nmecha gave the visitors the lead in the first half. However, Gakpo struck in the 92nd minute after being set up by Ruben van Bommel to secure a 1-1 draw for the Netherlands.
Softfootball reports that Gakpo’s injury now leaves Ronald Koeman with another selection issue as the Netherlands prepare for their next international assignment. The forward has established himself as an important attacking option for both club and country, making his absence particularly notable.
For Klopp, the draw against the Netherlands marked the beginning of a new era with Germany, although the former Liverpool manager will now look ahead to his next fixtures as he works to establish his preferred team and playing style.
