Manchester United ready to get a “competition” for Onana

Manchester United are preparing to step up their interest in Royal Antwerp’s promising goalkeeper Senne Lammens, as the club continues to explore options to bolster their goalkeeping department ahead of the new season, Softfootball understands.

The 21-year-old Belgian has emerged as a concrete target for United, with the club’s recruitment team identifying him as a long-term addition with the potential to compete for a first-team role in the future. The goalkeeper played 40 games for the Belgian side and recorded nine clean sheets, of which he saved four out of eight penalties.

According to United Focus, discussions are still at a preliminary stage, but further inquiry is said to be expected in the coming days as United intensifies efforts to land the highly-rated shot-stopper as competition for choice goalkeeper, Andre Onana.

United have already had talks with his people and are ready to engage in discussions with Royal Antwerp, who are believed to value the 23-year-old at around €20 million (£17m). He is seen as someone who can push current number one Andre Onana, and the club likes him as a goalkeeper due to his multidimensionality.

This is a follow-up to the earlier report done by Softfootball of United’s interest in Botafogo’s goalkeeper John Victor after Onana was declared unfit for the start of the upcoming season.

Lammens joined Royal Antwerp from Club Brugge last summer and has impressed with his composure, reflexes, and ball-playing ability, key traits that align with United’s evolving goalkeeping profile under Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils are keen to add depth and competition to their current setup, with uncertainty still surrounding the future of backup keeper Altay Bayındır and veteran Tom Heaton.

United will likely be hasty with this deal if all requirements are met as the new season draws closer, as Onana has been ruled out for six weeks, which means the Red Devils begin their 2025-2026 season campaign with either a new signing or Bayindir.
