Manchester United face surprise competition from Celtic for top Premier League star

Celtic are reportedly ready to battle Manchester United to sign Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin who is a free agent after turning down contract extension at at Goodison Park.

Softfootball understands that the England international is keen to secure a big move for himself and has been offered to various Premier League clubs by intermediaries, including Man Utd.

At present, the 28-year-old  is not a priority for the Red Devils, who remain desperate to finally attain a breakthrough in talks with Brentford over Bryan Mbeumo.

After Mbeumo, Man Utd want to target a more high-profile striker than Calvert-Lewin, but they may have to turn to him should they fail to find suitable alternatives.

According to CaughtOffside, Man Utd have not outright discarded the idea of adding Calvert-Lewin at some point this window, but the report claims that his wage demands could prove to be a problem.

The report claimed that Calvert-Lewin is likely to ask around £100,000-a-week from his next club, and that would be way out of the Hoops’  and United demands. It’s a lot of money to give to a striker who has been limited in fitness and form, to say the least, over the past couple of years, and also someone who could simply end up being a depth piece in Amorim’s squad.

Celtic currently have Adam Idah and Daizen Maeda as their two striking options, with Johnny Kenny as a young third choice, but a new man could be needed to complement Idah, and Calvert-Lewin fits the bill, especially as he is just 28 years of age.

Brendan Rodgers’ side won the domestic double last season, only failing to win the treble after losing on penalties to Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final, and they’ll want to avenge that blemish on their record by doing so again next year, with Calvert-Lewin’s firepower being a huge plus.

Softfootball reported earlier that Manchester United set to take £58m loss to offload star player as Amorim pushes for exit. Manchester United are reportedly ready to accept a huge loss to offload winger Jadon Sancho, a player once adored by fans at Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old has been a subject of transfer speculation all summer, and the Red Devils boss, Reuben Amorim, wants him out as he is not part of his future plans.

Juventus are ‘adamant’ that Sancho was one of the ‘world’s top five players in his position when United signed him back in 2021, that is why the Serie A side are thinking of offering him a permanent route out of Old Trafford, but it remains to be seen how much they will be prepared to pay to sign him.
