Softfootball understands that Mikel credits Makelele with shaping his career and influencing his style of play, having learned firsthand from one of the finest players to ever occupy the holding midfield role.

Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, the former Nigeria international said Makelele’s impact on football is reflected in the fact that the defensive midfield role became synonymous with his name.

“My mentor, my idol in my position that I played. For me, he is the greatest that has ever played in that position. You must be doing something right if you have a position named after you,” Mikel said.

The former Chelsea star also highlighted Makelele’s importance to the team, noting that his contributions often went unnoticed despite being crucial to the club’s success.

According to Mikel, the Frenchman provided the balance that allowed Chelsea’s attacking players to flourish, making him one of the most indispensable figures in Mourinho’s title-winning side.

Makelele enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at Stamford Bridge, winning two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two League Cups and the Community Shield, while establishing himself as one of the greatest defensive midfielders in football history.
