Late Penalty Extends Sevilla’s Goalless Run as Celta Edge Tight LaLiga Contest

3 Min Read

Sevilla’s difficult spell deepened as they slipped to a late 1-0 defeat against Celta Vigo, extending their run without a goal to four matches in all competitions, Softfootball reports.

The hosts started cautiously, with Sevilla captain Nemanja Gudelj making an early, crucial interception to deny Iago Aspas a through ball that would have released Ilaix Moriba. Despite that intervention, it was Celta who recorded the first effort on target, Bryan Zaragoza forcing Odysseas Vlachodimos into a sharp save after a swift counter-attack involving Aspas.

Sevilla showed flashes of intent going forward but lacked precision in the final third. They felt hard done by when appeals for a penalty, following Carl Starfelt’s challenge on Kike Salas, were waved away. At the other end, Javi Rodríguez’s low effort posed little trouble for Vlachodimos, as Celta — who began the night three points behind sixth-placed Real Betis — arguably created the clearer openings before the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with quality at a premium and both sides struggling to impose themselves. That prompted a double change from each manager, with Sevilla introducing Alexis Sánchez, while former Real Betis striker Borja Iglesias was welcomed onto the pitch by the visiting Celta fans.

Frustration soon grew among the home supporters, particularly after appeals for a foul by Óscar Mingueza on Lucien Agoumé were ignored by the officials. Sevilla’s evening worsened when Rubén Vargas, introduced moments earlier, was forced off injured in tears, with Adnan Januzaj replacing him.

Celta pushed late on. Williot Swedberg fired straight at Vlachodimos after a clever pass from Marcos Alonso, before the Sevilla goalkeeper produced an excellent double save to deny both Swedberg and Moriba. However, the breakthrough finally arrived when Oso was penalised for stepping on Moriba’s foot inside the area, allowing Alonso to convert the resulting penalty and seal the points.

In the moments of celebrations , Celta via its official X handle shared an exclusive moment showing Marcos Alonso celebrating with his teammates after the late winner. They posted:

The defeat means Sevilla have now lost their last four matches in all competitions, including a 2-0 away loss to Real Madrid, showing their growing struggles at both ends of the pitch. SoftFootball had predicted a 2-1 Celta Vigo victory, but this proved to be a far more cagey and tense affair, decided by a single moment late on.

For Celta, the win keeps their push towards the European places alive, while Sevilla are left searching for answers as their winless and goalless run continues.
