Softfootball gathered that Mourinho first joined Benfica as manager on 20 September 2000, marking his first-ever role as a first-team head coach after leaving his assistant coaching position at Barcelona.
He later made a high-profile return to Benfica for a second spell on 18 September 2025 after being dismissed by Fenerbahçe on 29 August 2025 following the club’s failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
