Athletic Club’s long-awaited return to the Champions League has lifted spirits in Bilbao, and no one understands the weight of the occasion more than head coach Ernesto Valverde, Softfootball reports.

Speaking ahead of their opening clash against Arsenal, the experienced manager reflected on the journey that brought the Basque side back to Europe’s top table, stressing both pride and responsibility. Ahead of the much anticipated showdown against Arsenal, the Bilbao manager during the pre-match press conference released via the team’s official website, Valverde underlined the significance of the stage, he said:

We’re very excited to be playing in this competition, the most important international club competition. The teams hold nothing back, they play with everything they have.

Arsenal are totally focused on this match. They are one of the favourites to win the Champions League thanks to their technical and tactical ability, and the winning spirit that [Mikel] Arteta has instilled in them.This experience must serve to make us better and enable us to compete more effectively.

While realistic about the challenge posed by Arsenal, Valverde made it clear that Athletic will not simply roll over, insisting his team must remain sharp in key moments, he stated:

We’ll have to be very careful and take advantage of opportunities. Arsenal won’t be forgiving.

The coach also expects the San Mamés crowd to play their part in what promises to be a special European night, he said:

Our fans are going to come very motivated. It’s the start of the Champions League and we’re playing against a high-level opponent, the kind that Bilbao likes.
