“I’ll Tell It All After I Retire” – De Gea Finally Talks About Failed Real Madrid Move

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has opened up, though only slightly, about the dramatic breakdown of his proposed move to Real Madrid back in 2015.

For those who may not recall, the move collapsed on deadline day due to what was famously blamed on a faulty fax machine. Yes, a fax machine in 2015.

In a recent interview with Cronache Di Spogliatoio, the Spaniard hinted that there’s more to the story than fans know but said he’ll wait until retirement to spill the full truth.

De Gea was set to return to Spain after cementing his status as one of the world’s top goalkeepers at Old Trafford. But just as the deal was about to go through, it hit a wall. Or more accurately, missed a deadline.

He Said:

“I will speak about all of that when my career is over. When things don’t happen, it’s for a reason. It was close, but the transfer wasn’t completed… Personally, it went well because Manchester is my home.”

De Gea joined United in 2011 from Atlético Madrid and went on to become a mainstay at the club. Under Sir Alex Ferguson, he grew into one of the most consistent and reliable players in the squad. By the time he left in 2023, he had won the Premier League, the FA Cup, the Europa League, and a couple of Carabao Cups.

In 2024, he started a new chapter in Serie A, signing with Fiorentina as a free agent. He’s since made 42 appearances and kept 11 clean sheets not bad for someone many thought was past his prime. His solid form earned him a new deal that’ll keep him in Florence until 2028.

As for United, there’s some movement on their end too Softfootball reported that Bryan Mbeumo has joined the club and will wear the No. 19 shirt, while Jadon Sancho’s situation remains unresolved. The club is reportedly finding it tough to find a buyer for the winger.
