Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare has revealed why he rejected a move to Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor during the summer transfer window, insisting he believes his career is destined for a higher level.

Softfootball understands that the Genk forward came close to joining Trabzonspor before deciding to remain in Belgium after being persuaded by head coach Thorsten Fink.

Arokodare admitted that while negotiations progressed, he never truly wanted to move to Turkey at this stage of his career. The 23-year-old explained that he would only consider a switch to the Turkish league for one of its biggest clubs, naming Galatasaray, Besiktas and Fenerbahce as the exceptions.

The striker also revealed that he briefly considered the transfer because he felt the atmosphere around him had become negative, making it seem as though he could no longer do anything right. He added that the financial package on offer was also attractive.

However, Fink convinced him to stay by expressing confidence in his abilities and assuring him that another year at Genk could pave the way for a move to the Premier League.

Arokodare has since remained with the Belgian club and will now hope his performances justify both his decision and his coach’s faith in his long-term potential.
