Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha has revealed why he is a big admirer of Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard, praising the Norwegian’s intelligence, versatility and creativity, softfootball reports.
Saha made the comments ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League clash against Manchester United at the Emirates, which marks Ruben Amorim’s first major test as United manager.
Since Ødegaard returned from injury, Arsenal have rediscovered their attacking rhythm, recording impressive victories over Sporting Lisbon in the UEFA Champions League and West Ham United in the Premier League.
Speaking to Arsenal News Channel, Saha compared Ødegaard’s creative qualities to those of United captain Bruno Fernandes.
“Ødegaard is someone that I really like. His intelligence as a provider is similar to Bruno Fernandes,” Saha said.
“I like his capacity to be in and out of the box. The area that he’s playing, sometimes he’s playing deep, sometimes he’s playing really high. He provides the connection with the midfield and the strikers, so I really like his positioning.”
The former France international believes Manchester United could benefit from having a player with Ødegaard’s profile.
“I would think that that’s what United needs to create chances, to create a high tempo, to create a bit of extra quality. Technically, when there is a bit of pressure, you can still give him the ball and it doesn’t matter to him.”
Saha, however, added that while he admires Ødegaard’s qualities, United could also do with a commanding midfielder in the mould of Declan Rice.
So I would say Ødegaard, even if I think physically, we perhaps need a player like Declan Rice in midfield.
