Rasmus Højlund has opened up about his difficult spell at Manchester United, admitting he once felt his career at the club was effectively over before a fresh start at Napoli reignited his confidence, Softfootball reports.
In different post match quotes shared by Fabrizio Romano on his on his official X account, the Danish striker revealed how early struggles, injuries, and competition limited his impact after his move to United in 2023, where he managed just 14 Premier League goals across two seasons.
He also noted that criticism back home in Denmark added to the pressure during that period.
Romano reported:
Rasmus Højlund on leaving Man United: “It felt like it was over for me at one point”. “Here at Napoli, I’ve rediscovered my love for football. People even back in Denmark were writing me off, but I never stopped believing”, told TV2.
Minutes later, Romano revealed another statement made by Hojlund , where he admitted his performance was not great during his time at united.
Rasmus Højlund: “If we look at the recent periods at Manchester United I did NOT perform well.. I’m aware of that, but now many things have changed”. “They even said I was finished in Denmark.. but I never gave up. At Napoli, I feel joy again”, told TV2.
A turning point came in August 2025 when Højlund joined Napoli on loan, a move that has since transformed his form and mindset. The Italian side have now activated their €44 million buy clause, with sporting director Giovanni Manna confirming the striker is a key part of the club’s long-term plans, regardless of UEFA Champions League qualification.

Højlund has thrived in Serie A, scoring 12 goals in 22 appearances as Napoli push for the title, marking a sharp contrast to his struggles in England and signaling a successful career revival.
