Hidden truths! As Europa League winner, Ange Postecoglu, almost joined Brentford

Recently sacked Tottenham manager, Ange Postecoglu was almost offered Brentford’s job days after being sacked and Tottenham signed then Brentford manager, Thomas Frank.

Softfootball gathered that Brentford were looking for a progressive coach that fit in their goals and considered a number of managers including former Ajax head coach Francesco Farioli, who has now joined Porto.

Postecoglu, popular for the quote he made in an interview while at Tottenham won the 2025 Europa League against Manchester United. Ange’s popular quote is:

In my second season, I win things

In what would had been an effective job swap, Ange only met with Brentford’s director of football Phil Giles for informal discussions but was not invited for the vacancy’s interview. The Athletic says both parties believed moving forward was not the best option.

Ange, 59, was sacked two weeks after that famous victory in Bilbao to land Tottenham’s first trophy in 17 years. The North London cited poor Premier League performance as their reason for the sack.

Postecoglou joined Spurs in June 2023 and he guided them to a fifth-place finish in his first season and also oversaw a vast overhaul of the squad during his two years in North London, which focused on youth, meaning Frank has inherited a team full of young players his predecessor signed.

Brentford eventually agreed to go with set piece coach, Keith Andrews as new head coach of the club after Frank left with three coaches, including Justin Cochrane, whom the West London club were keen on keeping and considering appointing as Frank’s successor.

Brentford have had to endure a few exits this summer as not only head coach Thomas Frank exited. Captain, Christian Norgaard has also joined Arsenal while Bryan Mbeumo is on the verge of joining Manchester United.

Although the deal seem to have stalled with United dragging their feet on the requested fee. Softfootball revealed that the Bees sent strong warning regarding the transfer.

It’s no secret that Manchester United and Brentford have been in close negotiations for Cameroonian forward, Bryan Mbeumo but the Red Devils may not get everything their way in the pursuit of the player.

Brentford had so far rejected two bids from the Red Devils, first £45m plus £10m in add-ons then £55m plus £7.5m in add-ons. It is understood that the club wants a higher guarantee fee for the player instead of unrealistic add-ons.
