Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has criticised Arsenal forward Kai Havertz for the way he celebrated a goal that was eventually ruled out during Sunday’s Premier League clash against Chelsea.
Softfootball understands that Havertz thought he had given Arsenal the lead at Stamford Bridge and celebrated enthusiastically, including appearing to gesture towards the Chelsea supporters, before the goal was disallowed for offside following a VAR review.
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel said he believed the German midfielder’s reaction was disrespectful to a club where he enjoyed success before joining Arsenal.
The former Chelsea midfielder acknowledged that emotions can run high during matches and suggested Havertz’s celebration may have been driven by adrenaline rather than ill intent.
However, Mikel insisted that former players should always show respect when returning to face their previous clubs, especially those where they won major honours.
Drawing from his own experience, Mikel explained that although he did not always feel fully appreciated by Chelsea supporters during his playing days, it never changed his affection for the club.
He concluded that celebrating a goal is understandable, but provoking former fans crosses the line and should be avoided, regardless of the circumstances.
