Softfootball can confirm Gabriele Gravina has officially resigned as president of the Italian Football Federation following Italy national football team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano via his x handle.

he stated:

OFFICIAL: Italian Federation president Gabriele Gravina has just resigned. It’s over.

The resignation comes amid a deep crisis in Italian football after the nation missed out on the World Cup for a third consecutive time, following previous absences in 2018 and 2022. Italy’s hopes ended in a playoff defeat, losing on penalties after being reduced to 10 men following a red card to Alessandro Bastoni.

In an official statement, the federation confirmed Gravina had informed the council of his decision, while thanking members for their support during his tenure.

Further changes could follow, with head coach Gennaro Gattuso also expected to step down in the aftermath of the failed qualification campaign.

A new president is set to be elected on June 22, although Gravina is expected to attend a parliamentary hearing on April 8 to address concerns regarding the current state of Italian football.
