Softfootball understands that Jean-Philippe Mateta has been dealing with a knee issue since November. Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed this and also shed a new light on the striker’s recent failed move to AC Milan. Speaking via comments updated by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on his official X handle, Glasner explained that the situation had been carefully managed because Mateta was determined to remain fully involved and continue playing.
According to Glasner, Mateta also informed the club of his intention to leave, which prompted further discussions about his future. AC Milan subsequently assessed the forward during medical tests but decided not to proceed with the transfer and not sign Jean-Philippe, Glasner added that further assessments are now planned to determine the best long-term solution for the player.
Romano reported that:
Glasner: “Mateta had a knee issue since November. He wanted to keep playing, so we managed it”. “Mateta told us he would like to leave. AC Milan assessed him and decided not to sign Jean Philippe”. “We will have further assessments to really find the best solution”.
It has earlier been reported that Crystal Palace and Mateta were close to making a key decision regarding possible knee surgery after issues were detected during double medical test sessions. Those concerns were confirmed when AC Milan officially abandoned the deal following a second round of medicals in London on Tuesday, 2 February 2026.

Meanwhile, in other news, Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has officially left Chippa United by mutual agreement. Nwabali departs after making 76 appearances and recording 25 clean sheets, closing an important chapter with the South African club.
