Former Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell celebrates 29th birthday

England left back, Benjamin James Chilwell popularly known in football circle as Ben Chilwell turns 29 today, Softfootball reports.

The 29-year-old left Chelsea on deadline day to join Ligue 1 club Strasbourg as he was deemed surplus to requirement by Blues manager, Enzo Maresca. Chilwell spent last season on loan at Crystal Palace.

Strasbourg celebrated the former Leicester City defender with a post via their official X handle. They posted:

Chilwelll who penned an emotion farewell to Chelsea when he left the club was in action this evening as he helped Strasbourg to a 2-1 win over Dunkerque in the French Cup. A perfect birth day gift for the player born December 21, 1996.

Chilwell is known as a modern full-back who combines athleticism with excellent technical ability. He provides width and makes effective overlapping runs, contributing both defensively and in attack with crosses, assists, and occasional goals. He is adept at carrying the ball forward and has a strong tactical understanding of his position.

Chilwell represented England at various youth levels before making his senior debut in 2018. He was part of the squad that reached the UEFA Euro 2020 final, where England finished as runners-up. He earned 21 caps and scored one goal for the senior team between 2018 and 2024.

Chilwell started his senior career at Leicester City, progressing through the youth academy. He made 99 league appearances for the club, with a brief loan spell at Huddersfield Town in the Championship. He played with the Fox from 2015 to 2020.

He signed for Chelsea in August 2020 and was a regular as they won the 2020–21 UEFA Champions League victory and also won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. His time there was marked by both success and significant injury setbacks.Chelsea  The Blues sent him on loan to Crystal Palace in February 2025 on loan for the remainder of the 2024-25 season and helped them to win the FA Cup.

Chilwell is currently a player of Strasbourg after he joined on a permanent two-year contract in September 2025 from Chelsea.
