Fans give Andre Onana a hero’s welcome as Man Utd flop lands in Turkey

Andre Onana received a hero’s welcome in Turkey as Trabzonspor fans turned out in numbers to receive him in Trabzon. The goalkeeper has joined the Turkish side on loan after his move was officially confirmed by Manchester United.

Onana’s relationship with United boss Amorim broke down irretrievably over the past month. The Portuguese manager was not impressed with the ex-Inter Milan star as he picked up a hamstring injury at the start of pre-season.

The Cameroonian international had fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford after several high-profile errors. Manager Ruben Amorim opted to start the season with Altay Bayindir and has recruited Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

Given his situation at Old Trafford, Trabzonspor moved to sign the player on loan and personal terms were quickly agreed. The deal runs until the end of the season and does not include an option to buy.

According to a post on Fabrizio Romano Facebook page, Onana looked thrilled to have United behind him as he touched down in Turkey. He was filmed being mobbed by fans after he arrived in the city of Trabzon. Romano wrote:

Softfootball was reliably informed that the 29-year-old goalkeeper will earn a higher salary at Trabzonspor, who will also pay bonuses and a signing-on fee.

Onana has departed Old Trafford at least temporarily, following two turbulent and error-laden seasons with Manchester United. His arrival in Trabzon was met with rapturous celebrations from passionate supporters.

Amorim has opted to start Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir ahead of Onana in the Premier League so far this season despite a series of shaky performances, with veteran Tom Heaton also still at the club.

Onana’s exit means that Amorim will have to pick between Bayindir and new-boy Lammens for the Manchester derby on Sunday, and whoever gets the nod will surely be concerned after Man City star Erling Haaland scored five goals against Moldova on Tuesday.
