Fabianski Returns to West Ham on One-Year Deal

West Ham United have announced the return of Lukasz Fabianski, who, at the age of 40, has re-signed a one-year contract. The deal comes just months after the veteran left the London Stadium as a free agent at the end of last season.

Softfootball understands that Fabianski was brought in after the departure of third-choice keeper Wes Foderingham, who joined Cypriot side Aris Limassol earlier this week, leaving the Hammers with only Mads Hermansen and Alphonse Areola as senior options.

Manager Graham Potter described Fabianski as a top goalkeeper and a top professional and the perfect choice for the role they needed to fill, despite keeping a clean sheet in the 3-nil drubbing of Nottingham Forest.

The Polish international who originally joined West Ham from Swansea City in 2018 and went on to make 216 appearances across seven seasons. During that spell, he won the club’s Hammer of the Year award in 2019 and lifted the UEFA Europa Conference League trophy in 2023.

In a statement via the club’s official website, they stated:

West Ham United is pleased to confirm that Łukasz Fabiański has rejoined the Club on a contract until the end of the 2025/26 season. The popular former Poland international returns to London Stadium, where he previously spent seven seasons, playing 216 games, winning the Hammer of the Year award in 2019 and lifting the UEFA Europa Conference League trophy in 2023.  An outstanding professional, Fabiański welcomed the opportunity to pull on his gloves again and is looking forward to rejoining his teammates, old and new, at Rush Green.

Fabianski himself admitted he was thrilled to return, telling the club’s media team:

I’m really, really, really happy to be back because this Club obviously means a lot for me and the people at this Club as well. Seeing them again, it felt nice and beautiful. I’ve always been, and I will be for sure, a player who is always putting the team above my personal goals. I think then maybe people see me as a good person to be around, a good person to have in the team in terms of what I bring and so it’s not only about me, it’s about the team. I’m here to support, to keep the standards high. I have huge experience as well, so I think it can be useful. For sure, I’ll continue to work the way I’ve always been doing, which is always hopefully at a good level but, at the same time, I understand that my role is completely different.

His return adds much-needed depth for a side that has endured a shaky defensive start. West Ham have conceded a league-high eight goals so far this season with Hermansen in goal. They currently sit 16th in the Premier League table ahead of Saturday’s London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.
