Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitike has opened up about his decision to join the Reds, insisting it was entirely his choice and not influenced by any external pressure or competing offers. The French striker revealed that while clubs like Manchester United and Newcastle United made moves for him, his heart was already set on Anfield.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s upcoming Champions League clash with Galatasaray, as quoted by football expert Fabrizio Romano via his official X account, the 23-year-old reflected on the journey that brought him to Merseyside and why the timing felt right.

He Said:
It’s just the best choice, it’s the champion of England. For me, they had great players, great history. It just fit with what I was looking for after Frankfurt. I think it was a good choice from me. That’s why I chose Liverpool – it’s just the best option, and I wanted to come.
Although Newcastle United came close to signing him and Manchester United also tried to lure him, Ekitike admitted he never really considered another option. He said the connection he felt with Liverpool’s project, coaching staff, and supporters made his mind up long before other offers arrived.
Still, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. The Frenchman received a red card during Liverpool’s Carabao Cup win over Southampton, which forced him to miss their Premier League defeat to Crystal Palace, and after being slammed heavily by Arne Slot as stupid, the player now admitted it was naive on his part, as quoted on the club’s official website.
He admitted:
Honestly, it wasn’t smart,” he admitted. “I got carried away after scoring — I took off my shirt, got a second yellow, and hurt the team. I’ve already said sorry to the players and fans. It won’t happen again. I just want to keep learning and focus on football.
Despite the setback, Ekitike’s start has been promising, with five goals in eight matches, and he’ll now return to the squad as Liverpool prepare to face Galatasaray.
