Augustine Eguavoen isn’t dwelling on past disappointment as Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles prepare for a rematch with old rivals Ghana.
The two nations will meet for a place at the 2025 African Nations Championship, a tournament Ghana denied Nigeria access to during the last qualifying cycle, a result that still stings within Nigerian football circles.
Softfootball learnt that Eguavoen addressed the qualifier on Eagle7fm Sports Radio, sounding confident heading into the two-legged tie despite that recent history:
We will qualify and do well at the CHAN.
The first leg will be hosted by Ghana next month, with the return fixture to follow at home in Nigeria, giving Eguavoen’s side a chance to overturn any deficit in front of their own fans.
CHAN, reserved exclusively for domestic-league players, will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania this cycle, with the tournament expected to draw strong interest across West and East Africa alike.
Nigeria will be hoping history doesn’t repeat itself against a Ghanaian side that has proven a stubborn hurdle in this competition before.
