Didier Deschamps is set to step down as France head coach when his current contract expires after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending one of the most successful managerial spells in international football.
Softfootball gathered that the French Football Federation (FFF) will not offer the 56-year-old a contract extension beyond the tournament, bringing his 14-year reign to a close.
Deschamps took charge of Les Bleus in 2012 after succeeding Laurent Blanc and transformed the national team into one of world football’s dominant forces.
Under his leadership, France won the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and reached the final of the 2022 edition in Qatar, where they lost to Argentina on penalties.
The former France captain also guided the team to the UEFA Euro 2016 final on home soil, further cementing his legacy as one of the country’s greatest coaches.
According to reports, Deschamps is expected to officially announce his decision soon. Before departing, his immediate objective will be to help France qualify for and compete at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
