Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi has criticised what he described as arrogance within Italian football following Inter Milan’s heavy Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
Softfootball reports that De Zerbi believes the 5-0 loss exposed wider problems in Italian football, particularly the confidence surrounding Inter before the final.
PSG dominated the final from the opening stages and secured the biggest victory in the competition’s showpiece match.
Speaking about the situation, De Zerbi also dismissed reports linking him with the Inter job, making clear that he remains committed to his project at Marseille saying:
Inter never called me.
De Zerbi has enjoyed a strong first season in France, guiding Marseille to second place in Ligue 1 and securing Champions League qualification. He has repeatedly indicated that he intends to continue building the project.
His criticism of Italian football comes after another difficult European campaign for Serie A clubs, with Inter’s defeat particularly damaging because of the scale of the scoreline.
The comments are likely to fuel debate about the competitiveness and tactical direction of Italian football.
De Zerbi, meanwhile, is expected to remain focused on Marseille as preparations begin for the club’s return to Europe’s elite competition.
