CWC Final: Chelsea defender confident of victory over PSG

Ahead of the epic final between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday, Blues defender Levi Colwill says he is confident of a victory over the Ligue 1 Champions, Softfootball reports.

The Club World Cup has produced some fantastic entertainment and it is believed among fans that the final of the competition is setup nicely with a game between the Champions League winners and Conference League champions.

According to Goal, Contrary to belief in some quarters that Chelsea are the underdogs heading into the game, Colwill strongly disagrees as he feels the Blues are good enough to win the encounter.

Colwill was part of the Chelsea side that beat Benfica 4-1, Palmeiras 2-1 and Fluminense 2-0 in the knockout stages to reach the final.

But PSG are a different kind of beast, having won the UEFA Champions League final by thrashing Inter Milan 5-0, they beat high flying Bayern Munich 2-0 at the Club World Cup with 10-man and followed it up with a 4-0 thumping of Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the tournament.

Yet, Colwill showed no fear as he told reporters:

“They’re an amazing team but we are not Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

“We’re going to bring something different. We’re different players and we’re confident in ourselves that, hopefully, we’ll try and win the game.

“I think most people around the world will expect PSG to win but we don’t think that in our camp.

“I remember the first time in this tournament when I’d done media and I said to everyone we’re winners and we’ve made it this far. So it shows I’m not lying. The players have got a really top mentality and we’re excited to going in to this final.

“When you play for Chelsea, you’re not scared to play against anyone and that’s how we all feel.

“If everyone thinks we’re going to lose, we’ve got nothing to lose then. We’ve got to go out there and play our football and be confident and hopefully try and surprise everyone.”

Softfootball had reported earlier how some Chelsea players were named in the Club World Cup team of the week. And they can draw some motivation from there heading into Sunday’s final.

Colwill has been solid for Chelsea since he came back from loan with Brighton during the 2022-2023 season. Chelsea face PSG on Sunday as they eye further silverware, with the Conference League winners taking on the Champions League holders.
