Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) following the opening of disciplinary proceedings over his abrupt departure from Portugal’s national team camp.

The federation’s Disciplinary Council confirmed that a formal case had been initiated to examine the circumstances surrounding the Al-Nassr forward’s exit. The process has been designated urgent, with Ronaldo facing a potential suspension while the investigation continues.

The incident dates back to September 30 in Copenhagen, where Ronaldo left the Portugal camp ahead of a Nations League fixture against Denmark. His departure followed growing tensions with head coach Jorge Jesus over his playing time and disagreements about commitments reportedly made concerning his involvement in the team.

Ronaldo was frustrated after being left on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway, having expected to feature. The disagreement escalated before the Denmark match, with the Portugal captain eventually leaving the camp despite attempts by Jesus and FPF president Pedro Proença to persuade him to stay.

Following the controversy, the 41-year-old publicly accepted responsibility for his actions and apologised to supporters and his teammates. He also acknowledged that his position as captain did not exempt him from disciplinary consequences.

Under FPF’s disciplinary regulations, a player who unjustifiably abandons a national team gathering can face a suspension ranging from one to six months, alongside a possible financial penalty. However, Ronaldo’s final punishment has not yet been announced, and the disciplinary process will determine the outcome.

The provisional suspension represents a significant development in a dispute that has attracted considerable attention across Portuguese football. Although Ronaldo has expressed his willingness to continue representing his country, the case now places his immediate international availability in doubt.

The federation has referred the matter to its disciplinary investigation committee, with proceedings continuing urgently. Until a final verdict is delivered, uncertainty will remain over the length of any suspension and when Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer could next feature for the national team.
