Cristiano Ronaldo marked his return to Al Nassr by scoring his 980th career goal in a 3-0 victory over Al Diriyah in the Saudi Pro League on Friday, October 9, as attention remains focused on his ongoing dispute with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus.

The 41-year-old forward opened the scoring after 23 minutes at Al-Awwal Park. Ronaldo gave Al Nassr the lead and moved another step towards the historic milestone of 1,000 career goals.

The goal came at a significant moment for the Portugal captain, who returned to club football following a turbulent international break.

Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp after being an unused substitute in the Nations League victory over Norway, with reports pointing to disagreements over his role under Jesus. Ronaldo subsequently criticised what he described as broken promises regarding his playing time.

The situation raised questions about his relationship with the national team coach and whether the disagreement could affect his international future.

At club level, Ronaldo’s latest strike reinforces his determination to continue scoring at the highest level. He entered the match with 979 career goals and now stands at 980, leaving him just 20 goals away from reaching 1,000 across club and international football.

The milestone has become a major talking point as the veteran forward approaches the later stages of his career.

Although retirement speculation continues, Ronaldo remains focused on extending his scoring record and contributing to Al Nassr’s ambitions.

For Ronaldo, however, the headline was his latest landmark and a reminder that, even amid uncertainty surrounding Portugal, his pursuit of football history continues.
