Former Sporting CP and Portugal defender Fabio Coentrão has backed Ruben Amorim to succeed at Manchester United, describing the Portuguese tactician as the best coach in world football.

Softfootball understands that Amorim recently took over as Manchester United manager following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag after a disappointing run of results.

Coentrão believes the move to Old Trafford is fully deserved, insisting Amorim has earned the opportunity through his outstanding work at Sporting CP.

The former Real Madrid full-back said Manchester United have appointed an exceptional coach who is capable of restoring the club’s fortunes.

Despite Sporting losing the manager who transformed the club in recent years, Coentrão expressed happiness for Amorim and said he is confident the 39-year-old will continue to make Portuguese football proud in England.

He also urged supporters not to compare Amorim with his successor, João Pereira, stressing that each coach has his own identity and approach.

According to Coentrão, Amorim left Sporting in a strong position after building a well-organised squad, and it is now up to Pereira to complete the work already started.

The former Portugal international added that, given the quality of Sporting’s current squad, the Lisbon club remain favourites to retain the Portuguese league title despite Amorim’s departure.
