Christensen’s Return Gives Barcelona a Defensive Boost Ahead of Celta Trip

2 Min Read

Barcelona fans finally have something to smile about ahead of the trip to Celta Vigo, Andreas Christensen is back in the squad. The Danish defender, who’s been out for a few games with a calf problem, has now been cleared to play and is available for selection. For Hansi Flick, who addressed the press before the encounter, that’s a big relief as his side continues to battle with injuries across the backline.

Softfootball understands that Christensen’s return couldn’t have come at a better moment. He’d been taking part in light training earlier this week, but the club has now confirmed he’s fully fit and ready to go. Barcelona made the return of Christensen official when they revealed the team’s squad for tonight’s game in a post made via their official X account.

They posted:

Even with Christensen back, the squad still isn’t at full strength. Marc-André ter Stegen remains out, meaning Wojciech Szczęsny should keep his spot in goal. Jules Koundé is a slight doubt after missing part of training, while Eric García is expected to play with a protective mask after suffering a nose fracture.

Still, Christensen’s return adds some much-needed balance and experience, especially after that disappointing 3-3 draw against Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League. It gives Flick a bit more room to work with at the back, alongside Ronald Araújo, Pau Cubarsí, and Alejandro Balde. With that kind of depth returning, Barça will be looking to tighten things up defensively and grab all three points before the international break, especially against a Celta side that’s been finding its rhythm lately.
