Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Pep Chavarría after positive progress in talks with both the player and Rayo Vallecano, Softfootball understands.
The 28-year-old Spanish left-back is already close to agreeing personal terms with Chelsea, while club-to-club negotiations with Rayo Vallecano continue to advance.
The move is being driven by new head coach Xabi Alonso, who is keen to strengthen the left side of his defence with specialist left-back and left wing-back options ahead of the new season.

Chelsea opened formal talks with Rayo Vallecano yesterday as they stepped up their pursuit of Chavarría, who has emerged as one of the club’s priority defensive targets.
Highly regarded for his consistency, defensive awareness and versatility, Chavarría is capable of operating both as a traditional left-back and as a left wing-back, making him an attractive option to add quality and depth to Chelsea’s squad.
